Compared with some parts of the U.K., East Hampshire and the people who live here are relatively wealthy. This is information from Government surveys. Statistics do not, as we all know tell the whole truth for whenever statisticians talk about averages there is little mention of all the households at the wrong end of the scale. The numbers of households who are in fuel poverty that is to say spend more than 10% of their net income on fuel [ lighting and heating], has steadily risen since 2010.

The Petersfield Lions Club recognised this some time ago and launched the Winter Fuel Project in order to alleviate some of the problems of poorer households in our area. The scheme has been a success, it has prior to this year raised £9,440 from the generous pensioners who have donated all or part of their Winter Fuel Payments to our scheme. We are pleased to announce that we are repeating it this year. All of the money is held by The Club and is then given to The Petersfield Citizens Advice who will assist some of their clients who are in desperate need. In East Hampshire 7.8% of households are in Fuel Poverty. Thanks to The amazing support of The Petersfield Post we are able to play a small part in helping those in our community who have fallen on hard times for whatever the reason.

Helen Drake, Chief Executive at Citizens Advice East Hampshire has confirmed to us how grateful they are for this initiative. 14 families already this year have been helped. She encourages anyone who feels they need the support to contact them directly on 03444 111306 or call in to their office at The Old Surgery, Heath Road, Petrsfield. Opening times are Monday,Tuesday and Thursday 9.30 am- 4.00 pm and Wednesday 9.30 am- 7.00 pm and they will carryout an assessment of needs and make money available to those who need it most.

If you want to contribute, then please write a cheque payable to the

writing "WINTER FUEL" on the reverse and hand into the office in Winton House, 18 High Street, Petersfield.
