The Lions Club of Petersfield, held the twentieth annual quiz and draw on Friday, 31st October at the Petersfield Festival Hall. The evening was in aid of Holidays for Disabled People and raised a total of £2250, a little below last year’s record of £2600. Since 1992 a total of £29,733 has been donated to Holidays for Disabled People.

The draw was held during the interval for twenty one prizes which were generously donated by local people and businesses. The first prize of £100 was won by Rosita Collins who generously donated £50 back to the cause. Rosita had been a member of the Eight O’Club which started the annual quiz twenty years ago. Lion’s Club member Clive Midson again acted very ably as Quiz Master.

Twenty eight teams took part and Holidays for Disabled People supported the evening by entering two teams. Other teams were made up of local clubs, societies, businesses and friends. The winner of the quiz was a team from Life Church Petersfield with a score of 84 out of a possible 90. They were presented with £60 and a trophy to keep for a year. The Buddies were second with 79 and a team from Petersfield Musical Festival were third with a score of 78. The team with the lowest score of 56 were presented with a large block of chocolate each.

A full list of the results and prize donors can be found on the Lions Club website www.petersfieldlions.org.uk.

Derrick Fulker of Holidays for Disabled People thanked everyone for attending and congratulated the Petersfield Lions, and the Eight O’Clock Club before them, for holding an annual quiz to raise money for Holidays for Disabled People and for managing to keep the event going for twenty years. His organisation had been formed in 1961. The holidays for disabled people are supported, usually, by one helper per disabled person. Medical staff are also in attendance throughout the holidays . The holidays are costly to organise and need specially adapted transport and numerous items of general and medical equipment. The amount raised at the quiz, although impressive, is a mere drop in the ocean when it is realised that three specially adapted coaches are needed for each year’s holiday at a cost of £3,500 each.
